On Wednesday, I had another big Zoom call. This time it was the monthly meeting with my board of directors. So I spent the previous afternoon and that morning getting all my notes and things together, getting prepared. This group does like to do a video call, so I got cleaned up. I opted to skip the shaving this time.
But I was inspired by one of my board members last month, who was wearing a tie and said he still wears one every day to feel more focused and in the game. So I put one on, too. Of course, I wasn’t going to go as far as putting on dress pants or tucking in my shirt. That would be lunacy.
It occurred to me that I was sporting the Steve Dallas from Bloom County look.
Full disclosure, this is probably the natural quarantine progression of how I’d ideally like to dress, and not just because I was a huge Bloom County fan in the day. I like wearing dress shirts, but hate tucking them in. I like ties, but hate tightening them up all the way and, as previously mentioned, I hate tucking in shirts.
So this is the perfect look for Zoom calls, and I expect I’ll be wearing this kind of thing to the office a lot.
The meeting went reasonably well. I often do these kinds of calls in our back room, where I can close the door, but for this one I rolled the dice and had it in my office. I love my office, but it’s in kind of an open loft area upstairs so it does run the risk of canine or child interference.
But I started thinking about it, and is that happening even an issue for anyone anymore? I feel like if Hollywood would have optioned the story of my working from home life a year ago, there would almost certainly be a scene in the trailer of Henry shouting “I WANT CRACKERS!!!” while I was talking to customers on a conference call.
This actually did happen, by the way.
But now? Jeez, who hasn’t had that happen to them? Remember back before COVID, there would occasionally be the story of the working pro on TV or in a meeting and their kid busts into the background and does something silly or cute? How adorable. I feel like that gag is way played now. When movies of life in this time are made, the kid breaking into a conference call will be as cliche as Bad to the Bone being played over a character putting on sunglasses and looking tough.
Nothing all that exciting the rest of the day, as I can recall. It was a really nice day and the kids spent a lot of time playing outside, which was great. Around dusk, they found a little football we had stashed away somewhere and got into the idea of doing some place kicking. I tried to impress on them the importance of having the LACES OUT!
They have been watching a lot of Charlie Brown, and when I took this picture, Amelia actually started down the road of pulling a Lucy and pulling the football away. But she is too good natured for that and wound up putting it back.
It’s goooooooood! Next I need to show the kids videos of the Gramatica brothers and teach them how do over the top celebration dances.
