Up and at ’em early again on Thursday morning, we got the car packed up and bid adieu to Omaha. On the road again.

It took all of 26 minutes for Henry to ask if we were getting close to Chilton. Once again, it’s all a matter of relativity. Close on a cosmic scale, yes. But on our reality plane, we still had some eight hours to go.
And what a thriller of a drive it is. We spent the bulk of the day driving through Iowa. And not the exciting parts, either.
Let me attempt to capture the essence of the drive:
- Rolling hill.
- Windmills.
- Some more hills, with a bit less of a roll.
- Buncha’ semis driving by.
- Closed rest stop.
- “Are we close now?” — Henry Schneider, with 7 hours and 12 minutes left to go.
- More hills.
- Straight road.
- Gas stations.
- Enormous Bass Pro Shop.
- Mississippi River!
- Slightly more abrupt hills.
- “Why are there so many trees in Wisconsin?” — Amelia Schneider
- Pass a Culver’s.
- Pass another Culver’s.
- Hills
- Stop at a Culver’s for cheese curds.
- Flat highway.
- Two fat guys in tank tops waving flags on an overpass near Beaver Dam for some reason.
- Lake Winnebago.
It was a LONG day in the car, but the kids did well and we all muddled through. At last, we reached our destination: Chilton!

We were excited to get to my sister’s house, and delighted to see our family after nearly a year since our last get together. Grandma and Grandpa were there, too, and we all had a nice dinner together and got to hang out for a while.

Big thanks to Rosemary, Eli, Jack, Lizzie and Gabe for having us over. We are looking forward to a few days with family.
