Back in the old, normal days, Wednesdays were dubbed “Wacky Wednesdays” at Amelia’s school. That’s a fun, whimsical way of saying that the kids got out early on those days, so the parents would have to pick them up around 1pm. Wacky indeed.
Continuing in something of that tradition, it appears Wednesdays will be more free form learning days in the current online education setup. So Amelia had a series of activities and assignments to complete.
It was getting close to 8am, her usual start time, but since there was not firm times today, I let the kids take their time a little in the morning and asked Amelia if she wanted some breakfast.
“No Dad,” she said. “I want to get started on my schoolwork so I can get it done and then play with Henry.”
Wow. As a guy who has struggled with procrastination in his life, I was pretty impressed by that go-getter attitude. If I had that kind of option as a kid, and the assignments were due at 3, I’d probably step away from the TV around 2:30. But not our little girl. She got right on it, and indeed got her work done early so she could enjoy the rest of the day.
So far, she is really taking well to the online learning experience. I know we’re only about a week in, but I hear her engaging and participating and she tells us she likes her teacher and is really enjoying it. So we are pretty fortunate on that front and knock wood, I hope it continues.
For me, it was the beginning of a lengthy to-do list of work and other items to try to get wrapped up before we leave on Friday for Wisconsin. The days zipped by and I had lots to do, but did take a little break to play some baseball with the kids in the backyard for a few minutes in afternoon.
After dinner, Amelia asked to play again. She was really on fire that day, having knocked 6 in a row over the fence. Henry decided he was more into basketball that evening, so we had a multi-sport event going on.

I relented on the “come on, Dad, one more pitch!” plea many times, and before we knew it, it was dark. We felt like real big leaguers playing under the lights.

Though “the lights” was mostly the full moon.

I will say her hitting production did go down when it became impossible to see the ball, but it was fun nonetheless. We finally wrapped it up and called it a night. She was unsatisfied that she only hit 7 homers. Hey, nobody’s perfect.
