Yesterday I wrote about how tired and low-energy I was on Sunday. That seems quaint now that I reflect back on Monday, the first day back from Thanksgiving break, a day when I felt so tired I couldn’t conjure the energy to lift my head to groan about how tired I was.
The first day back after a long break is always difficult. I wasn’t alone in that. None of us really wanted to jump back into reality, and the kids struggled just as much as the grown ups. I had to bribe Amelia with a Count Chocula breakfast to get her up to her computer for school.
It was also back to therapy for Henry, and while he was excited to see his therapist come back that morning, it quickly became clear that he wasn’t super into things on this first Monday back, either.
Me, I had tons to catch up on and plenty to do, and it felt like each keystroke was a feat of superhuman stamina and strength. I had one Zoom meeting on the calendar, and thank goodness the person on the other end of that must have been having a similar day, because it got rescheduled at the last minute. Whew!
But we all pushed on through and did the best we could, taking it a little easy on ourselves for the fact that it’s always a little hard to go back. But as I wrote long ago in this blog that I believe there is some kind of weird inverse equation of the amount of energy kids have to the amount of energy adults have (the more hyper the kids, the more exhausted the adults), I think the same may hold true for dogs.
We humans were all pretty much sleepwalking through the day, but Asta and Islay were getting in some pretty intense playtime. It was extremely entertaining to watch.

Of course, I wish I had just a tiny bit of their energy, but I should also note that in between play sessions they would both pretty much sleep for hours at a time. Now that is the life. Asta really seems to be taking to her new little sister, and has even taken to training the little pup on some of her favorite things, like scrounging every last molecule of food from dishes in the dishwater.

So it was a tough day, but I do believe that when the universe gives us a challenge, it also gives us the tools to deal with that challenge. In our case, it was the arrival of our brand new Nespresso coffee maker.

Oh, that’s some good stuff, and you better believe that got some use on a post-holiday Monday.
