Saturday mornings are a matter of solid protocol and routine at the Schneider Haus. Erin was off to teach a few dog training clients, and the kids and I loaded up and masked up to head out to make our weekly Trader Joe’s run.

It went really well, as it has lately. We get in and out pretty quickly, and the kids really enjoy helping out. And by “helping out,” I mean that I hand them an item, they carry it to the other one, and that one puts it in the cart. Teamwork.

Amelia also gets to pick out a new fruit to try each week, part of our initiative to get the kids to try and eat new things. This week it was a Sumo Orange, which basically looks like an extra wrinkly orange, so we’ll see how that goes.

At the end, while I’m going through the checkout and bagging groceries, the kids like to play around. The cashier gave them suckers, and they were doing a little swordfight thing with them.

After our grocery run, I dropped them off for the afternoon at their grandparents house, and they were super excited to spend some time with them.

I got home and put the groceries away, and when Erin was finished with work for the day, we decided we’d take advantage of this rare, quiet moment of time free of snack requests and such and go have a quick lunch together. We went to a nice local place called Next Door, which had comfy outdoor seating and good safety protocols. It was a beautiful day, and perfect to be outside, soaking up some sunshine. Lunch was delicious, too, and we had nice time together, complete with grown up conversation and everything.

So caught up in the zen of the moment was I that no photos were taken, so I later described our lunch to Amelia and she was kind enough to create an artists’ rendering for me. I think she captured it quite well.

She even made sure to ask what we both had (I had tacos, Erin had a salad), and they are depicted here. Quite well done.

After that, we both relaxed and took a little nap. I’ll be honest, I knocked out HARD. I had been up with the kids at about 5am the past two days, and it turns out that caught up with me. I laid on the couch and put on a documentary series about the Roman Emperors and didn’t even make it past Julius Caesar’s childhood.

I woke up about an hour later and was so groggy, I honestly thought it was morning and was all freaked out that I slept all night on the sofa. At last, I came to my senses and went to pick the kids up. As expeced, they had a fun time, and then we all just hung out for a while at home. Lately they have really been into this science show on Netflix called “Emily’s Wonderlab,” so they watched a bit of that before bed.

It’s a good show, and their interest explains the fact that back at the grocery store, when I picked up ketchup, Amelia asked me, “Do you know why ketchup is hard to get out of the bottle sometimes?” I confessed I didn’t, and she calmly told me that it was because it’s a non-Newtonian fluid. Huh. You learn something new every day. At least, with kids like Amelia and Henry around, I certainly do.
